Connecting the Northern Hemisphere
/This month, let’s take a look at how The Air Charter Guide evolved and grew by region while tweaking format and data.
On the cover from 1988, we see Chuck Spencer, CEO of HubExpress Airlines, “giving the keys” to Carolyn Moore of the Boston law firm McDermott & Rizzo after The Air Charter Guide donated three hours of helicopter time to a new business user on behalf of one of its advertisers. “HubExpress Airlines was a helicopter startup that delivered execs from various locations like Logan, the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge to Digital Equipment Corp and the like,” remembers Fred Gevalt, Founder of The Air Charter Guide.
The same edition moved to a “City-Listed Format” while operators like Clay Lacy started to update their fleet and contact information on a regular basis with us.
As Scott Cutshall, VP Real Estate & Sustainability at Clay Lacy, reflects on our journeys: “Lots of blood, sweat, tears, and laughs over the years!” Scott and Clay Lacy, we thank you for your support and business over many, many years. Let’s circle back to the legacy of Clay Lacy soon.
A 1989 cover of The Air Charter Guide notes the addition of “Europe” to the directory, an important next step in the pursuit of the “North Atlantic Route.”
In his 2026 memoir-in-progress, “A Swim in the Firmament”, Fred Gevalt takes you on his transcontinental flight from Bedford, Mass, to Goose Bay to Europe in his single-engine aircraft:
“September of 2003 finds me again in my cockpit on the airport ramp at Goose Bay, Labrador. I am about to depart on a sales trip a second time for Europe in my single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza - before with a friend, this time alone. The en route weather is good, and I have a newly installed engine that has run for two hundred hours - enough service to prove its reliability, but not enough to have begun to cause any wear. I have the value of the transatlantic flight experience I earned on my first flight in 1999 with my old college pal, Russell MacAusland.”
We will continue with nostalgic flashbacks throughout the year to celebrate our 40th anniversary. Shocking as it may be for those in GenX, this year also marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic film “Crocodile Dundee,” which provided the foundation for what many Americans know – or believe they do – about culture in Australia.
