Brown Is Beautiful - Zeppelins in the Air
/Our blast-from-the-past cover features UPS. In the foreword of the 1996/97 winter edition of The Air Charter Guide, founder Fred Gevalt writes: ”Never mind that carriers sport paint schemes that like travelogues or airborne popsicles, chocolate airplanes will soon decorate airline ramps at America’s watering holes as UPS Airlines follows its strategic business plan. Tailored for ambidextrous use, five of UPS’ fleet of 727-100’s will spend the workweek hauling brown cardboard packages and the weekend chartering passengers for cruise lines and vacation tour operators.” And if you look at the cover, you clearly see that UPS’ conversion Boeing aircraft did have windows. The concept didn’t last long, but it demonstrates how flexible our industry has been for an ever-moving market. During the pandemic, cargo aircraft were in high demand, and the reverse became true. Many of us remember private passenger jets flying with skeleton crews to China to pick up hygiene gear and other essential precious cargo. As the world and demands change for our aviation community, we find a constant in UPS: still moving our goods, and brown is still beautiful.
April was a turbulent month to say the least! We missed seeing you at EBACE this year for sure but re-energized and re-grouped in Germany. Reporting back from Aero Friedrichshafen, the birthplace of the Zeppelin airship, was Michele Markarian, Director Strategic Accounts: “Aero F provided a fantastic opportunity and venue for catching up with new and old friends, particularly in the wake of EBACE’s cancellation. I’m already looking forward to next year”.
