Position Summary:

The Manager of Safety is responsible for the administration of the Company Safety Management System (SMS) program and functions as the Chairman of the Safety Committee. This position monitors safety issues, provides safety education, investigates incidents and accidents, acts as a resident expert on safety matters, helps to develop loss control standards, and makes recommendations to improve safety in the workplace. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

Responsible for the Safety Management System (SMS) program and for overall safety at the Company.

  • Ensure that safety program elements are carried out
  • Review all hazards, receive all safety forms and evaluate with management
  • Make recommendations to correct/prevent identified safety issues
  • Implement corrective or preventative action, as required
  • Monitor corrective/preventive actions, as necessary
  • Monitor compliance with applicable safety standards (e.g., DOT, FAA, OSHA, EPA)
  • Research issues for possible solutions or someone else’s lesson learned
  • Monitor trends in the voluntary reporting system, as well as in accident and incident reports
  • Provide periodic reports to management on program status and compliance
  • Work with the Designated Safety Officer for the Flight Department and Maintenance Department, Chief Pilot and other department heads
  • Assume administrative rights for the ARG/US PRISM computer program
  • Ensure compliance with the Flight Risk Assessment Tool (FRAT) program and that information is logged appropriately
  • Review FRAT reports to ensure compliance
  • Monitor/review data from safety reports for high risk areas
  • Review reoccurring risks and adjust corporate profile accordingly
  • Conduct or distribute the internal evaluation audits as per ARG/US PRISM program and review the audits for any corrective action or possible trends
  • Assume responsibility as gatekeeper for Quick Access Recorder (QAR) downloads
  • Enroll new aircraft or maintenance personnel in FOQA programs
  • Review monthly reports from the analysis provider(s) with the Director of Ops, Chief Pilot or Safety Officer for Flight or Maintenance
  • Review Flight Operations Event Reports, evaluate with management, and direct required action, as advised by the Director of Ops, Chief Pilot or Safety Officer for Flight or Maintenance
  • Follow up/monitor/review all hazard reports

Responsible for the role of Emergency Operations Coordinator and Chairman of the Safety Committee

  • Meet, train and provide oversight of the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) to ensure preparedness
  • Act as the Emergency Operations Coordinator for the charter ERP
  • Schedule quarterly safety committee meetings
  • Keep records/minutes of committee meetings
  • Communicate safety issues to all personnel, as required
  • Make recommendations to correct/prevent identified safety issues to mitigate the risk as part of loss control standards
  • Distribute safety related articles and accident recaps to company personnel
  • Act as liaison with safety organizations (formal and informal) on matters of industry safety concerns
  • Participate in all outside safety audits (Wyvern, ARG/US, IS-BAO, etc.), and address corrective actions, as necessary
  • Attend CASS and other TEB airport meetings, as required
  • Conduct a ‘Welcome to SMS’ for new employees
  • Conduct Remote Base audits (initial or yearly)
  • Conduct employee (safety) meetings to promote safety
  • Update Safety Manuals
